The appearance of acne on the face traditionally coincides with some important event: a job interview, a date, or a performance on stage. Everyone knows the basic rule: do not squeeze pimples with dirty hands.

In general, makeup should always start with cleansing, otherwise you risk getting bacteria into your pores, which cause inflammation and infection. Experts have told us how to hide acne on the face and what mistakes to avoid in your daily makeup routine.

Step 1: cleansing

As with any makeup application, it's important to start the procedure by cleansing your face and hands. If you apply makeup to unwashed skin, you risk introducing more bacteria to your skin, which can lead to other breakouts. Cleaning with a regular wipe or water will not be enough. If you really don't have time for a full cleansing, at least use micellar water, as micelles act like magnets, pulling oil, dirt, and debris out of pores for a deeper cleanse.

Step 2: preparation

Makeup artists advise starting with the right concealer to neutralize discoloration. To smooth out redness, use a green concealer, and to counteract hyperpigmentation, choose a peach concealer. Apply a small amount of concealer directly to the pimple and gently blend it with your finger or a small flat brush.

Step 3: main stage

After you have neutralized the pigmentation, apply a regular concealer to the skin, chosen according to the complexion.

"It's better to set a creamy product with a light layer of powder so that the makeup lasts all day," advises Dr. Dendy Engelman, MD, dermatologist.

Don't use your usual big fluffy brush for spot treatments. Even a small eyeshadow brush will provide more precise application.

Step 4: protection

Of course, some acne is so severe that a spot concealer alone won't help. In such cases, Engelman recommends using a clean acne patch before applying makeup.

"For pimples that are harder to disguise, I recommend using transparent patches and even applying concealer to them so that they blend in perfectly with the skin and makeup," the dermatologist said.

What mistakes to avoid

The most important thing is not to use dirty makeup brushes or sponges on pimples as they can increase irritation and the likelihood of infection. Also, do not apply concealer or foundation directly to the pimple with a stick or applicator. This can bring bacteria from the pimple into the entire bottle of concealer or foundation, which can trigger new breakouts.

In addition, you need to be mindful of the ingredients in the cosmetics you apply to the pimple.

"Certain ingredients, such as alcohols and talcum powder, can make acne worse. Even natural products such as coconut oil are harmful to acne because of their fatty acids," Engelman warned.

Another prohibited ingredient is silicone.

"Silicones form a layer on the skin, trapping bacteria and sebum in your pores," Engelman warned.

Avoid shimmering or shining products as well as they will visually enlarge the pimple.

In general, it's important to let the skin breathe during the healing process, so the best way to deal with a pimple is to put a patch on it or leave it alone.
