Growing flowers from seeds is a fun and economical way to create a colorful garden or decorate your home. However, even the most dedicated gardeners can run into difficulties if they don't take into account some important nuances. From choosing the wrong seeds to watering mistakes, every step is important for successful plant growth.

Knowing common mistakes will help you avoid disappointment and get healthy, beautiful flowers. Nine.com.au experts told us what mistakes to avoid so that your efforts will yield the best results. By following simple tips, you can turn your seeds into a luxurious garden.

Beginners often face mistakes that prevent them from achieving the desired result. Here are the most common ones and how to avoid them.

Ignoring the sowing depth

Maintaining the correct sowing depth is one of the key success factors. The packaging of seeds often indicates whether they should be covered with soil. For example, some flowers germinate only on the surface because they need light, while others need to be buried a few millimeters.

A common mistake beginners make is to cover all types of seeds with soil, thinking this is a universal rule. If the seeds do not germinate even when following the instructions, it is worth checking recommendations from other sources. For example, some seeds that look "off" may require a different sowing depth.

Wrong choice of location for seedlings

The place to place the crops should be sunny, but not overheated. Direct sunlight in the heat or drafts can harm your seedlings. The ideal option is light shade in the afternoon and protection from strong winds or rain.

Mini-greenhouses help to create a stable microclimate. It is important that the greenhouse has good ventilation to prevent excessive moisture accumulation, which can cause rotting. If the greenhouse overheats, you should leave the door partially open to ensure air flow.

Improper watering

Watering is another common problem. Too much water can cause the seeds to rot, while too little can cause them to dry out. Watering from above often dislodges the seeds or buries them too deeply, which hinders germination.

It is better to use a plastic tray, adding water to the base to gradually moisten the soil. If you need to water from above, do it with a spray bottle, avoiding watering during the hottest part of the day. Watering seedlings during the day in the sun can be especially harmful - it can literally "steam" your plants.

Using plastic trays for seedlings

Although plastic trays with cells are popular, they have the disadvantage that if you remove a few seedlings, the soil in the remaining cells can dry out quickly. A more effective option is to use paper or cardboard pots.

Such pots are easy to make yourself from newspapers or toilet paper rolls. They allow you to transplant seedlings without disturbing the root system, as the pots simply decompose in the soil. In addition to being convenient, this method is also environmentally friendly.

By avoiding mistakes with sowing depth, location, watering, and trays, you can achieve better results and enjoy vibrant flowers in your garden. Experience with each season will help you improve your skills and delight yourself with even greater success.
