The mystical atmosphere of Halloween will give you an incredible experience if you choose the last days of October as a great reason for a vacation. Many European cities are actively preparing for the spookiest holiday of the year. Experts have even created a rating of the best destinations to spend an unforgettable Halloween weekend.

However, there is a risk that these popular cities will be overcrowded with tourists. Instead, the Express publication told us which picturesque city in the center of the wine region would be an ideal option for a spooky Halloween escape.

Halloween traditions originate from the ancient Celtic holiday of Samhain, which existed more than 2000 years ago. It was a combination of a harvest festival and preparation for the cold, dark season. People lit bonfires, wore costumes to ward off ghosts, and believed that on the night of October 31-November 1, the line between the world of the living and the dead would disappear.

Popular cities offer a lot of entertainment on Halloween. Dublin is always crowded on Halloween, as tourists from all over the world come here, and Derry celebrates Halloween on the biggest scale, with events lasting as long as 9 days.

On October 31, various festivals, costume contests, joint screenings of horror movies, etc. are held around the world.

However, tourism experts advise to pay attention to the small French town of Beaune, surrounded by the Côte d'Or vineyards. Beaune attracts those who want an exciting spooky Halloween vacation, and, most importantly, there are almost no tourists here.

The municipality and the city are located at a distance of about 280 km southeast of Paris, 37 km southwest of Dijon.

Beaune is a beautiful small town surrounded by stunning nature and vineyards, making it the quintessential French flavor.

Beaune hosts an incredible Halloween festival, where ghost tours are woven into the history of the city in a surprising way and include delicious seasonal wines and great market treats.

European Waterways expert Marian Sparks characterized Beaune as a city that "brings the spirit of the season to life."

While Salem or Derry are iconic destinations in the last days of October, it's worth paying attention to the real hidden gems that create the holiday spirit. Beaune combines a rich history with colorful festivals and rich themed events.

OBOZ.UA also said that the experts analyzed such factors as the number of walking tours with ghosts, the presence of cemeteries and urban legends, as well as the average length of daylight hours in each destination.
