Caring for orchids during the winter months can be difficult. After all, this tropical guest, which has become a common houseplant, does not tolerate a lack of light and heat, and owners often unknowingly harm it by over-caring for care and watering.

OBOZ.UA found out how not to harm the orchid in the winter months and even make it bloom regularly. These life hacks primarily concern the popular phalaenopsis.

To begin with, it is very important to make sure that you have the right temperature for orchids in your home. In winter, it is necessary that the thermometer does not fall below 16 °C, because in colder conditions, plants can begin to suffer and show signs of stress.

It is also important that the temperature is fairly stable. Orchids do not tolerate sudden changes in cold and heat. Moreover, when it gets hotter than 26 °C, the plant begins to invest efforts in growing new leaves and roots, which delays flowering.

However, a slight nighttime cooling will benefit the flower. However, the nighttime temperature in the room should not be more than 5 degrees lower than the daytime temperature. And in no case should it be allowed to fall below 10 °C. Otherwise, the flower may suffer from cold injury – parts of the orchid will become watery, and lose color, and the plant's growth will slow down.

Lighting is also very important for your orchids. They will not grow if you keep them in a dark room. They need to get at least eight hours of natural light a day. If it is cloudy in your region, make sure to provide the flower with lamps.

Ideally, you want to keep the orchids facing the same direction as the light. In this case, all the buds will also face the light and open one by one. This way you will get a beautiful cascade of flowers.

Making sure your orchids are well moisturized is also very important. But it is equally important not to overwater them because excessive moisture causes significant damage to the plant. Check the condition of the plant's roots between waterings during the winter season. Water evaporates longer in cold weather, so the number of waterings will need to be reduced. Wait until the plant is dry before moistening its substrate again. And make sure that the water you put in the pot is not too cold.
