Festive Lviv: the best Christmas locations in the ancient city
The town, breathing history and romance, turns into a real fairy tale at Christmas. Bright lights, the aroma of coffee and chocolate, and the melodies of Christmas carols create a unique holiday atmosphere. Today we tell you what to see and where to visit during the winter weekend.
Christmas market
Located on Svobody Avenue and Rynok Square. The attraction is held annually from December to January.
The event was first held in 2009. It was the first of its kind in Ukraine.
Tourists can buy ceramics, jewelry, handmade jewelry and toys. You can also taste donuts, dumplings, and hot chocolate.
We also recommend going to the main Christmas tree in front of the Lviv National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater. A symbolic anti-tank "hedgehog" was placed on top of the tree.
Rynok Square
We recommend going shopping first. The festive installation has been delighting Lviv residents and visitors for ten years in a row. It was created by a talented craftsman, and now a defender of Ukraine, Anton Lubiy. The composition consists of seven two-meter figures carved from poplar and painted by children.
There is an open-air skating rink nearby. You can rent equipment here.
Be sure to take a stroll through the old streets. On the eve of the holiday, many establishments set up large-scale themed decorations. They will be great areas for photo shoots.
Angel Square
Every year, the traditional ceremony of installing the main didukh of Lviv is held near the majestic Garrison Church.
The four-meter-high symbol of Ukrainian Christmas becomes a city decoration and a reminder of the centuries-old traditions of our ancestors. By the way, it was made by the craftsmen of the Klymentiy Sheptytsky Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life.
This year, representatives of the authorities and clergy, defenders of Ukraine, young carolers, and all concerned Lviv residents and guests joined the festive procession. The event was held on December 24 at 12:00.
Shevchenko Grove
It is located on the territory of the Ascension Landscape Park. The location is considered not only a landmark cultural institution but also a historical center for the revival of national traditions.
Its goal is to popularize the culture, folk architecture, and ancient life of the western part of Ukraine.
Today, it houses more than 21,000 items and about 110 large-scale architectural objects.
Tourists can visit old manors and see what they look like inside. By the way, part of the territory is divided into 6 ethnographic zones: Boikivshchyna, Lemkivshchyna, Hutsulshchyna, Bukovyna, Podillia, and Lvivshchyna.
Every year, caroling with stargazers and artistic nativity scenes are held here. There is also a shop with live animals.
Potocki Palace
The first building was built in the classicist style. However, in 1860-1861 it was dismantled. In 1880, the construction of a new residence began.
Today the building is made in the style of French classicism. On the ground floor, tourists can see the grand reception halls. They were decorated with gilding, marble and paintings.
Travelers can make an atmospheric photo shoot near the Christmas decorations.
