Czech Republic to give up Russian oil in a few months: it already stopped buying gas from Russia

The Czech Republic will stop buying Russian oil and nuclear fuel in a few months. Thus, the country will achieve "energy sovereignty".

This was stated by Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, iROZHLAS reports. "The Czech Republic should become a much stronger state in terms of energy, including control over key raw materials," Fiala said.

According to him, the government took steps to get rid of dependence on Russia last year and will continue to do so. At the same time, it is working to strengthen the state's role in the energy sector, which Fiala said is proving to be a strategically important sector.

"The Czech state has taken responsibility for a large part of what was until recently in the hands of private investors or other states. These steps in the field of energy security were necessary and related to the threats and challenges we face," the Prime Minister said.

He reminded that the Czech Republic has secured a stake in liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, bought the Net4Gas pipeline operator and is preparing to increase the capacity of the Transalpine pipeline (TAL). The country is also preparing to build new nuclear reactors, both conventional and small modular. "With all these steps, we are building real energy sovereignty. This is something absolutely important these days," he said.

According to Fiala, to ensure national security, it is also necessary to strengthen the economy. He called the development of transport infrastructure important but also believes that support for education, science and research, and their connection with industry, is equally important.

As OBOZ.UA previously reported, Bulgaria has introduced a tax of about 20% of the price of Russian gas transit through its territory. Such a step could cause a dispute with Moscow and significantly increase the price of natural gas for Hungary and Serbia.
