A referee unexpectedly showed a round red card in the FA Cup. What does it mean

The incident occurred in the 9th minute

The FA Cup last-16 match between London's Brentford and Wolves from Wolverhampton became the subject of discussion on social media, but not because of the score (1-1). The main reason was the action of the referee Tony Herrington, who showed a round red card.

In the 9th minute, Wolves' Brazilian midfielder João Gomes hit Kristian Nergor's leg with sneakers' spikes. The referee immediately decided to send him off with an unexpected card.

It's worth noting that the rightfulness of the decision was confirmed by the VAR video assistant. Gomes currently faces a three-match ban.

In the comments, fans began to wonder why the card was not rectangular. As it turned out, the topic of round cards is not new, and they were shown back in the 90s.

There are two reasons for this.

First, it is done so that the referee does not confuse them in his pocket when he needs to make a quick decision. And the second is that it helps color-blind players understand which card is which.

As OBOZ.UA reported, on October 19 last year, fans attending a fifth-division match in Portugal witnessed an extremely rare football spectacle: a white card. The video went viral online in a few hours.
