Popular lakes in Ukraine

Ukraine never ceases to amaze with its natural treasures. A special place among them belongs to lakes. From the highland Carpathian lakes to the wide Volyn reservoirs, each of them has its own unique vibe.

Brebeneskul (Zakarpattia region)

The highest mountain lake in Ukraine is located at an altitude of 1801 meters above sea level. To get to the reservoir, you need to go on a hike along the Chornohora ridge. Due to its special shape, Brebeneskul is also called the "Blue Eye of the Carpathians".

You need to be brave to swim in the lake because the water temperature here reaches no more than 9 degrees Celsius even in summer. You can pitch a tent on the shore and spend the night to watch the most amazing sunrise in your life.

An interesting fact: the name of the reservoir comes from the Romanian word "brebenoc", which means "periwinkle". Locals believe that once upon a time there was a meadow under the mountain where these flowers grew.

Svitiaz (Volyn region)

One of the seven natural wonders of Ukraine is also the deepest lake in our country. The reservoir belongs to the group of famous Shatsk lakes. The maximum distance from the surface to the bottom is 58 meters, which is almost four times the depth of the Sea of Azov.

Svitiaz is an ideal place for swimming because its waters are extremely clean and contain silver ions. The bottom and beaches have fine white sand. Nearby there are sanatoriums, hotels and recreation centers where you can stay and enjoy the scenery of this region.

An interesting fact: in the 70s of the nineteenth century, a passenger ship used to run on the lake. It transported locals and tourists.

Lemuria (Kherson region)

According to a legend, once upon a time, the Lake Lemuria used to be on the site of the reservoir, hence the modern name. It is famous for the unusual pink color of its water, which also has healing properties. Due to the high concentration of salt, here, as well as on the Dead Sea, you can lie on the waves without drowning.

While vacationing in this region, you will have a unique opportunity to take healing baths in mud, the healing properties of which are scientifically proven and famous throughout Europe. Local mud is even supplied to cosmetic companies in the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland and other countries.

An interesting fact: the water in the lake is pink due to the vital activity of the unicellular algae Dunaliella salina. They produce beta-carotene when exposed to the sun. Therefore, the hotter the summer, the more saturated the color becomes.

Synevyr (Transcarpathian region)

The largest and deepest alpine lake in Ukraine is the hallmark of the picturesque Carpathians. There is a legend that the reservoir was formed from the tears of a lord's daughter Synia after her beloved boyfriend Vyr was killed by a stone block.

Synevyr is located at an altitude of 989 meters on the territory of the reserve of the same name, so swimming is prohibited. However, you can breathe in the fresh mountain air and walk through the centuries-old spruce forests that surround the lake.

Interesting fact: the reservoir is also called the "Eye of the Sea" because there is an island in the middle that looks like a pupil.

Yalpuh (Odesa region)

The largest freshwater lake in Ukraine and the second largest in Europe attracts more and more travelers every year. The reservoir is 39 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide, but its depth is only 5.5 meters.

The place is very popular among fishermen, as it is home to grass carps, pikes, and pike perch, which are not typical for the region. After relaxing on the lake, we recommend visiting the town of Bolhrad, which was founded in the times of Kiyvan Rus. There you can admire ancient churches or taste local wines.

An interesting fact: there are "pyramids" on the shore of the lake. These are clay "dunes" that are the product of constant erosions. They are definitely worth your attention.

Solonyi Lyman (Dnipropetrovsk oblast)

It is located 300 kilometers from the sea, but the lake water is much saltier, which is why there are no fish here.

It is almost impossible to swim in the reservoir due to a layer of sticky silt on the bottom. Nevertheless, it has beneficial properties, so there is a sanatorium nearby where you can undergo mud therapy.

An interesting fact: the estuary is an important nesting place for birds. In different seasons, you can see a black-winged stilt, a common crane, a black-winged pratincole and a pied avocet near the reservoir.

Basaltove (Rivne region)

Formed on the site of a flooded quarry, the lake is known for its incredible blue color and clear water. In the middle of the reservoir is a small piece of land that the locals call the Island of Love.

At the bottom, you can see huge rock fragments and a flooded excavator bucket, so it's no wonder this place is popular with divers.

An interesting fact: one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine, the Basalt columns, is located near the reservoir.
