Whether your entire room is carpeted or you only use small rugs, you know exactly how quickly they get dirty. Getting dust and small debris out of the pile is challenging.

However, experienced cleaners say that certain household habits can make it easier to care for carpeting of any size. Apartment Therapy publication Apartment Therapy has outlined seven of the most effective.

Buy quality doormats for your front door

The job of such a mat is to collect dirt from the feet of people coming in from the street. Choose options that do this most effectively, hold dirt well and are easy to wash. This is especially true in the cold season, when it is wet and muddy outside. In addition, you should place two such mats at the door at once: one in front of the entrance, and the other immediately behind it.

Clean any stains without delay

The longer you waste time after a stain has appeared on your carpet, the more difficult it is to clean. To ensure that your carpets and rugs last as long as possible and stay as clean as possible, be diligent and clean any stains immediately. Keep in mind, though, that different materials and types of stains require different cleaning methods, so make sure you use the right solution for your carpet. For example, if you have pets, keep a bottle of specialty stain remover on hand.

Always remove your shoes indoors

With outdoor shoes, we bring the most dirt. And if washing it off a smooth surface is not such a problem, cleaning it off carpets is a real challenge. So when you get home, wipe your feet and immediately take off your shoes. Change it to slippers. This in addition will work for your psychological comfort. Become a special ritual of coming home, after which all the problems of the outside world can be left behind.

Don't skimp on a good vacuum cleaner

Any vacuum cleaner collects some dirt from the carpet. But only a quality one will do it deep enough, and at the same time remove allergens such as pet hair. Certain models can even wash the carpeting. So think about what features you need and try not to save a lot on the purchase.

Do vacuuming twice a week

Vacuum cleaning should be regular enough to keep your carpets really clean. Use the appliance at least twice a week. Be sure to go over each area 8 to 12 times - depending on how often it is walked on. Comb the brush through the pile in different directions.

Have carpet cleaning products on hand

Besides vacuuming and stain removal, there are many ways to clean and freshen the carpet in your home to keep it looking good and odor-free. Bulk materials such as cornstarch, baking soda or borax, as well as hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, rubbing alcohol and essential oils can help. The first ones can be sprinkled on the pavement for a few hours, after which you can collect the residue with a vacuum cleaner. The others will help in the fight against stains and unpleasant odors.

Have your carpet professionally cleaned once a year

To keep your carpet clean and damage-free for as long as possible, you should make sure that it gets a deep professional cleaning at least once a year. To do this, you can call in a team of cleaners who will treat the surface with special products using professional equipment. Or you can rent this equipment and do everything on your own. But beforehand familiarize yourself with the technology of cleaning with the chosen tool, because the wrong work can only exacerbate problems and even provoke the development of mold, if you use a steamer.
