The best films that are sure to scare you

The days before Halloween seem to be made for movies that can scare you to death. And the best option for this is a selection of sci-fi horrors.

This combination of genres has an undeniable ability to scare you with once unimaginable scenarios. Sci-fi elements include fear of the unknown, the vastness of the universe and what lives in the abyss, aliens, time travel, eerie transformations, and much more. Here is a selection of the top 10 sci-fi horror movies from space.com, which are perfect for watching not only on Halloween but all year round.

A Quiet Place (2018)

Can you imagine a world devastated by aliens who hunt you solely based on sound? The movie A Quiet Place is about people who have to live in complete silence to survive. One of the most terrifying themes in science fiction is the threat of another life form coming to Earth, which brings only horror. And the monsters from A Quiet Place do not come in peace. If you're looking for a thrill, look nowhere else.

Slither (2006)

This movie is just perfect for Halloween. Even the movie poster makes you want to scream, run, or faint.

An alien plague of parasites descends on a small town, turning its inhabitants into truly terrifying monsters. If the phrase "go through it" isn't enough to describe the creeping, crawling nightmares that are about to start stalking you, then the eruptions of green slime and bloody transformations will certainly do the trick to seal the deal. In a way, it's also a comedy because, frankly, if you don't laugh, you'll probably cry.

Annihilation (2018)

Based on the novel of the same name by Jeff Vandermeer, Annihilation heads to The Shimmer, a mysterious meteor-induced anomaly zone that is at its own mysterious and terrifying point in space and time. A group of scientists, including Lena (Natalie Portman), travel to the area filled with mutant animals and plants to try to uncover what sinister phenomenon is hiding there. However, what they find there challenges them all.

28 Days Later (2002)

Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up from a coma to find out that the UK has fallen victim to an incurable "rage virus" that is spreading rapidly. What could be worse than a zombie hunting you down? A zombie who is incredibly violent. As Jim wanders through an empty London, he encounters other survivors trying to escape the virus, but it's not just the infected that pose a threat. Inspired by the Night of the Living Dead movies, it's perfect for the spooky season, and the epic soundtrack further increases the tension and fear.

Nope (2022)

OJ (Daniel Kaluuya) and Emerald (Keke Palmer) are disturbed by an unidentified flying object. While the siblings are busy trying to figure out what's really going on, others exploit the mystery and face the consequences. The film instills fear in its audience, allowing it to take deep roots and then grow exponentially. It's the dread, not the excessive gore or violence, that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

The Thing (1982)

There's something incredibly special about 80s sci-fi movies and their raw special effects and cinematography, and this cult classic is a true portrayal of the horrors of the time.

When a team of scientists conducts research in Antarctica, they come across "The Thing", a shapeshifting alien that can take on human form whenever it wants. Suspicion as to who is who begins to wreak havoc on the team, and this is before the threat of The Thing itself becomes a real problem. It's definitely horror, but it's also a great science fiction film.

The Fly (1986)

Eccentric scientist Seth (Jeff Goldblum) is trying to invent teleportation. But when one of his experiments goes horribly wrong, he begins to suffer the consequences in the form of bloody transformations. To be honest, it's not even entirely clear which stage of the human-fly hybrid is the most frightening as it evolves throughout the movie... or can we say all of them?

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

In this sci-fi horror film, health inspector Matthew discovers that people are being eerily replaced by aliens. Not only in appearance, but also in personality and memories. But one thing is missing: emotions. This quiet invasion creates tension throughout the movie. As the mysterious pods create more and more problems for the city of San Francisco, the situation seriously spirals out of control as an invisible enemy takes over.

Alien (1986)

This movie is one of the most iconic works in the history of science fiction films. No matter how much people want the alien xenomorphs to stop terrorizing them, they just can't get enough. But it's the characters of the spaceship The Nostromo who have the trouble of worrying about them first, as in Alien, they seize power with incredible brutality.

Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

For a true Halloween vibe, Bride of Frankenstein is a must-see. Although this movie is not considered the most horrifying in the literal sense, it is the most eerie. After all, Frankenstein has been a symbol of Halloween since Mary Shelley's 1818 novel to this day. So, in this sequel to the original Frankenstein, the story expands on what is most famous. In this movie, the monster is here, but Henry Frankenstein is lured back to create a bride.
