High-profile scandals and funny Oscar embarrassments

"The Oscars are undoubtedly one of the most prestigious film awards in the industry. However, over the 95 years of its existence, the award ceremony has repeatedly witnessed high-profile scandals and funny embarrassments that have been forever written into the history of cinema.

We can only assume what awaits us at the 96th ceremony, which will take place this Sunday on the night of March 11. And now OBOZ.UA offers to recall the most memorable moments of the previous Oscars, which were discussed for days by moviegoers and viewers around the world.

Unexpected appearance of a naked guest, 1974

The year 1974 was marked by a "naked" scandal for the award. When producer Michael Phillips was preparing to present the nominees for Best Picture, and actress Elizabeth Taylor was about to announce the winner, a completely naked man suddenly ran onto the stage. He turned out to be an artist, photographer and activist for the rights of the LGBT community, Robert Opel. He showed a sign of peace and then disappeared, leaving a trail of shock, confusion, and embarrassment.

Later, several versions were voiced of what Opel wanted to do with his "naked" action. According to one of them, the photographer was protesting against the ban on nude beaches. According to another, he just wanted to show people that they shouldn't be ashamed of their bodies.

Who said that dresses are only for men? Trey Parker and Matt Stone shocked in 2000

The creators of the cult animated series South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, are great pranksters. In 2000, they attended the Oscars in women's dresses. And these were not just random images. These were the same dresses (or rather copies of them) that Jennifer Lopez and Gwyneth Paltrow had previously worn in public. Later, the animators revealed that they were "high" because they would not have dared to go out in public in such outfits if they were sober.

The fall of Jennifer Lawrence, 2013

In 2013, Jennifer Lawrence was recognized as the best actress for her role in the movie Silver Linings Playbook. When the star was going up on stage to receive her coveted statuette, she got tangled in the fluffy skirt of her own Dior dress and fell right on the stairs. We have to admit, it looked quite graceful. The funny thing is that exactly a year later, Lawrence fell again, but this time on the red carpet of the award.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep lost the Oscar

Do you remember when DiCaprio didn't have an Oscar yet? It created a lot of funny memes online, so when the actor finally got one in 2016 for his role in The Survivor, it was both an extravaganza for Leo's fans and a bit of a disappointment for the skeptics who had no doubt that the statuette was given to the actor purely out of politeness. But DiCaprio's reaction still raises many questions. On the one hand, he was sincerely looking forward to the award, but on the other hand, he lost it on the same day, demonstrating that it had no weight or significance for him. The actor left the statuette in a restaurant after the afterparty. It was later returned to him.

Perhaps DiCaprio was simply following the example of the famous Meryl Streep, who also lost one of her three Oscars. It was the actress' first statuette in 1980 for her role in the movie Kramer vs. Kramer. The star was so nervous that she left the award in the toilet. Rumor has it that Streep's colleagues still remember that funny incident.

It wasn 't La La Land that won : the embarrassment of 2017

The year 2017 witnessed one of the most dramatic moments in the history of the Oscars. During the announcement of the winner in the Best Picture category, the hosts mixed up the envelopes with the movie titles. This led to the announcement of La La Land as the winner instead of Moonlight. The mistake was revealed after the entire La La Land team came on stage, received the statuette, and began to give a speech of thanks. It is hard to imagine how awkward this situation was for the teams of both films, the presenters, the show organizers, and everyone in the audience.

Oscar in Will Smith's hands: the slap in the face of 2022

The 2022 ceremony witnessed an unprecedented incident. The actor Will Smith, who received his first golden statuette that year, literally a few minutes before his triumph, went on stage and slapped the host Chris Rock in the face. The reason was a joke about the short haircut of Smith's wife, who at the time was struggling with alopecia, an autoimmune disease that leads to hair loss.

Chris Rock said: "Jada, I love you, G.I. Jane 2, I can't wait to see it." Will Smith then promptly exploded, walked up to the host and hit him, shouting: "Keep my wife's name out of your fucking mouth!" This episode provoked a strong reaction around the world and divided the public's opinion on Smith's actions. Most are convinced that the slap was staged. However, it is still unknown whether this is true.
