"Will inspire Ukrainians": Lomachenko officially gets date and venue for new championship fight
Ukrainian former world champion in three weight categories Vasyl Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KOs) will return to the professional ring in late spring this year. The native of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi will fight 30-year-old Australian George Kambosos (21-2, 10 KOs).
This was announced at a press conference in Australia. It is noted that the fight will take place on May 12 in Perth at the RAC Arena. At stake will be the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) lightweight championship belt, which Vasyl failed to take away from Teofimo Lopez (19-1, 13 KOs) in October 2020 and which he has never held in any weight category.
"If I become a champion, it will inspire Ukrainians. Because now we have only one world champion, Oleksandr Usyk. On May 12, the country may get a second champion. I respect Cambosos. He never gives up. It will be a very interesting fight because we preach two different styles. And styles make fights," Lomachenko commented.
We would like to remind you that on May 21, 2023, Lomachenko lost to Devin Haynie (30-0, 15 KOs) by unanimous decision, provoking a lot of controversy among fans and experts. After that, the famous American trainer and former world champion in the second lightweight division Robert Garcia called on the Ukrainian to end his career.
It should be noted that Lomachenko and Cambosos were supposed to fight in the summer of 2022, but the Ukrainian refused because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
