Will Fury be stripped of his championship belt? The WBC made a categorical statement
The World Boxing Council (WBC) will not impose sanctions on Tyson Fury (34-0-1, 24 KOs) for disrupting his fight against Oleksandr Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs) on February 17. In this way, the organization responded to the calls of many fans and experts to punish the Briton for his unwillingness to fight the Ukrainian.
WBC President Mauricio Suleiman said this in an interview with the Seconds Out YouTube channel. He emphasized that he understands the disappointment over the postponement of the fight for the title of absolute world heavyweight champion, but now everyone is focused on the new date of the fight.
"Stripping Fury of his championship belt? We've never received any requests for that. Absolutely not. It's just the tension of the moment and disappointment. You have to understand that a lot is at stake in this fight. So if you find out the news that the fight has been postponed, your day becomes very bad. I don't want to speculate on the topic if the fight doesn't take place on May 18. I'm a big fan of Usyk and I respect our champion Fury," said Suleiman.
Earlier, the official came up with an idea to radically change the work of the judges at the fight between Usyk and Fury. In addition, the head of the WBC suggested using a video replay system during the fight.
Usyk and Fury's fight was scheduled for February 17, but the Gypsy King was cut during a sparring session two weeks before the show, and it was postponed to May 18. Later, the main reasons why Tyson would not be able to refuse to enter the ring against the Ukrainian again were named.
Oleksandr's team has named a boxer who will replace Fury if he refuses to enter the ring. In the updated contract for the fight, the rivals were charged a multimillion-dollar fine.
Bookmakers reacted unexpectedly to the postponement of the Usyk-Fury fight by changing one of the quotes on its outcome. Two conditions were also revealed that the Ukrainian demanded to fulfill when he agreed to postpone his return to the ring on February 17. In addition, the media announced Tyson's and Oleksandr's fees for the show.
