Why short nails are trendy again and what are the advantages
While long nails in their various shapes - almond, square, and oval - are at the peak of popularity, shorter nails remain an unspoken classic. They're plain and simple, but not the most daring or exciting, so long nails win thanks to social media influencers and Kardashian-level celebrities.
However, short nails have many advantages over long ones, which is why they have become one of the biggest manicure trends of 2023, proving that this length can also be bright and bold. Experts shared with TZR why short nails remain at the top of manicure trends.
Charlotte Knight, the founder of Ciaté London, speaks about the popularity and revival of minimalist beauty in recent years. "Short nails are in line with the modern 'clean girl' aesthetic that is currently in trend," the professional says, "They are luxurious, low-maintenance, and look more natural than long ones."
Vanessa Sanchez McCullough, the famous nail artist for Blake Lively and other stars, agrees, "I think people are finally realizing that the size of the 'canvas' doesn't matter," she says. "Short or long nails, you can still have a beautiful fashionable look."
Short nails for practicality
Long nails have more room to create intricate designs but can be a lesson in trial and error in terms of functionality. Take Cardi B, for example, who often posts on TikTok how to open a jar, button up clothes, and change diapers as an instruction manual for living with a long manicure. With shorter nails, of course, daily tasks are not stressful because they do not catch on things. "Short nails are easy to take care of," says Emily Rudman, founder of the nail brand Emilie Heathe, "They don't get in the way, for example, at the gym or while cooking.
Short nails are more hygienic
Extra nail length (regardless of material) is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. Short nails allow for regular cleaning. The smaller the surface area of the plate, the easier it is to maintain hand hygiene.
You can create innovative designs on short nails
"Bright and bold colors still look incredible on short nails," Knight says. Just because the area is smaller doesn't mean you can't experiment with your manicure. The expert observes how emerald green, neon yellow, and classic red are gaining popularity on social media. As for the shape, she suggests an oval or square oval because they are classic and lengthen the fingers, leaving room for drawings.
