While some steal, others mine: Ukrainian shows video of penguins building nests near Vernadsky
Last week, researchers from the Ukrainian Antarctic station Akademik Vernadsky shared footage of sub-Antarctic penguins stealing pebbles from each other to build nests. But a new video proves that not all the feathered inhabitants of Galindez Island are "criminals".
Serhiy Yakushchenko, an ozonometrist with the 29th UAE, managed to film a penguin looking for pebbles on the ocean shore and carrying them to his nest. The Ukrainian polar explorer posted this cute video on the National Antarctic Research Center's Facebook page.
"In contrast to the penguin thief we showed you a few days ago, we have a video of a hardworking penguin," Vernadsky researchers emphasized.
The video shows the bird several times going down to a small puddle on the ocean shore, looking for a pebble in it, and carrying it to its nest, which was nearby. He would do this about 5-6 times with an interval of 2-3 minutes.
Scientists emphasize that "penguins have different ways of getting stones." "Sub-Antarctic penguins can also use shells and bones to build nests. And sometimes these birds even try to crush some parts of Vernadsky's buildings to get "building materials". It happened that they stole loggers (devices for measuring air temperature and humidity) from our researchers," the Ukrainian polar explorers said.
Earlier, OBOZ.UA wrote that the network was amazed by the video of penguins stealing pebbles near Vernadsky.
