Which cars are ideal for driving in the snow: the best winter options

Yulia PoteriankoNews
Driving these cars on snowy roads is a pleasure

Driving on snowy roads puts increased demands on a car. It needs to be stable, controllable and provide perfect traction.

But Car Gurus points out that you also need good crash test results, automatic high beams, and driver assistance features. And who wouldn't want heated seats, steering wheel, mirrors and washer nozzles, as well as special driving modes during a winter trip? Finally, fuel economy is important, because in winter the car starts to consume more. Therefore, the journalists analyzed different categories of cars and selected the best options for driving in winter on snow and ice.

Compact crossover: Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4, like the Honda CR-V and Subaru Outback, was literally designed to drive in the snow. Each of the configurations of this crossover is equipped with both front and all-wheel drive. Most leave the showroom on 225/65R17 all-season tires, which can be used all winter long. However, winter tires will still significantly reduce the braking distance of the car. During the tests, the difference became noticeable at a speed of 50 km/h.

A mid-size crossover: Honda Pilot

After the 2023 redesign, the Honda Pilot has significantly increased in price. But this can be forgiven for the filling offered by the Japanese concern. Power is provided by a 285-horsepower V6 engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission. There are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity features, adaptive cruise control, frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure mitigation, and much more.

Full-size crossover: Subaru Ascent

One of the advantages of Subaru cars is the availability of all-wheel drive on almost all models, regardless of the configuration. That's why the Ascent SUV, designed for 7 or 8 passengers, feels so confident in the snow. The 22-centimeter ground clearance also adds to its advantages. But the branded all-season tires will have to be replaced immediately with winter tires, otherwise the car will not hold the road well.

Full-size SUV: Chevrolet Tahoe

If you replace the manufacturer's tires on the Tahoe, it becomes the perfect off-road vehicle for driving on snowy roads. The car gets all the necessary characteristics to successfully overcome obstacles, such as climbing uphill. It also ensures driver comfort. This includes all-wheel drive, heated seats, an excellent heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, and an excellent view of the road ahead.

A compact sedan: Honda Civic

The 11th-generation Honda Civic debuted in 2021 as a well-equipped model for a reasonable price. However, you will have to pay for heated seats, and in some configurations it is not available for the rear row at all. But the "native" Goodyear Eagle Sport tires that the manufacturer installs on the new car have good grip on snow.

Full-size sedan: Dodge Charger

Power is synonymous with this American automaker. But seat heating is a problem that can be annoying during winter trips in a Dodge Charger, because not all models come with it. You will often have to pay extra for this convenience. Otherwise, this is an ideal winter car. It comes with 20-inch wheels and tires, an upgraded audio system, 4G Wi-Fi, and an 8.4-inch touchscreen, as well as Nappa leather sports seats and a range of optional equipment.

Luxury sedan: Genesis G90

The Genesis G90 is impressive in every way. It has luxurious styling and incredible power, provided by a 3.5-liter V-6 engine with 375 horsepower. It also offers all-wheel drive as standard, whether you choose the base 3.5-liter turbocharged or the e-Supercharger hybrid. You'll also get a power liftgate, tilt-and-massage rear seats, and a Bang & Olufsen Premium Sound audio system. And Michelin Primacy Tour A/S tires that handle snow well.

A sports car: Volkswagen Golf GTI

Yes, this sports car doesn't have all-wheel drive, but it has a stylish interior that warms your heart and makes you smile every time you open the door. The VW was created for winter sports enthusiasts, as it has snowboard mounts and roof rails. It is also one of the few cars with a six-speed manual transmission. If you change the standard tires to winter tires, it will be your reliable companion on a snowy road.
