When to plant potatoes in 2025: favorable dates

Alina MilsentNews

The time for planting potatoes depends on many factors, including weather conditions and the variety chosen. However, there are general guidelines and favorable dates that will help you get a bountiful harvest. The soil should warm up to 10-12°C at a depth of 15-20 cm. This usually occurs in April-May, but can vary depending on the region.

Potatoes like light, loose, and well-drained soil, so it is important to prepare the site. Experienced gardeners also pay attention to the lunar calendar. OBOZ.UA tells you when to plant potatoes in 2025.

Sowing calendar

The new moon is considered to be an unfavorable time for sowing and planting plants. Vegetables and plants growing above ground are usually planted during the growing moon phase.

It is not advised to be active in the garden during the full moon. The waning moon is a good time to plant root crops and other plants that grow underground.

The best days for planting potatoes in 2025 according to the lunar calendar:

  • February - 15-19, 23-25;
  • March - 17-19, 23, 24, 27;
  • April - 5-7, 12-13, 20-22;
  • May - 5-6, 10-11, 19-20.

Conditions for planting potatoes

Gardeners who grow potatoes in greenhouses or in warm regions for early sale start planting in February or early March.

It is best to start the main gardening work in April or May. The soil should be warm enough for root crops to germinate easily. It is important to monitor temperature fluctuations, as frosts can slow down the development of plants or lead to their death.

Potatoes need moderate watering, so the soil should be moist, but not saturated with water. Excess moisture can lead to the development of root rot and other diseases.

Potatoes like sunny places protected from the wind. Sandy loam or loamy soils rich in organic matter are best. Heavy clay soils require loosening and adding organic matter.

The optimal soil acidity for potatoes is 5.5-7.0 pH. The best predecessors for potatoes are cereals, legumes, and perennial grasses. It is not recommended to plant the tuber after solanaceous plants (tomatoes, peppers, eggplants).

The planting depth depends on the type of soil and the size of the tubers. Usually it is 8-10 cm on light soils and 5-8 cm on heavy soils.

There is also an old folk sign: they say that potatoes should be planted when the buds open on the bank.
