What to treat the garden with in the fall and how to protect plants from pests

Fall is a busy time for experienced gardeners, as they need to prepare trees and shrubs for winter. The harvest next season will depend on it.

Well-pruned trees, free of dry and pest-infested branches, can withstand even frosty, snowless winters. At the same time, their growing season begins earlier in the spring. OBOZ.UA tells you how to treat the garden in the fall to protect it from pests.

What to do in the garden in the fall

Autumn garden care begins immediately after the harvest and lasts until the end of November.

Treatment and care include:

• pruning, including sanitary, shaping and thinning;
• treatment of hollows with a solution of iron sulfate for disinfection;
• treatment of trunks and cleaning them from growths;
• disinfecting and treating wounds on the trunks.

It is also worth removing all residues: branches, fallen fruit, leaves, bark remnants, lichens, and moss.

When digging up tree trunks and shrub aisles, experts advise applying phosphorus-potassium fertilizers. Seedlings and the soil under them should be treated with fungicides and insecticides.

How to treat the garden in the fall

Leaving fruit and berry trees and shrubs without fertilization and protection increases the risk of infections and pests in plant residues and soil.

After trees and shrubs have shed their leaves, it is advisable to treat them with pesticides. Many people are afraid of using pesticides, but they are the least harmful during this period. It is better to treat the garden before winter, when plants are preparing for a long period of dormancy, rather than waiting for spring.

For seedlings, you can purchase an effective systemic contact insecticide. These preparations destroy a number of pests on fruit and berry crops. They will help to get rid of a number of dangerous insects and their larvae: aphids, mites, scale insects, tinnitus, and moths.

The insecticide will also be useful for the prevention of fungal diseases. Protection includes double treatment of seedlings along the branches from all sides and disinfection of the trunk circle within a radius of 3-4 meters under the trees.

Herbicidal properties will help to get rid of malicious weeds (ragweed, woodruff), mosses and lichens.

The following solutions will be useful for prevention:

• Bordeaux liquid (3%);
• copper sulfate (5%);
• iron sulfate (7%);
• potassium permanganate (2%).

Any autumn treatment of the garden against pests and diseases is carried out in dry and calm weather, at a temperature of at least +5°C. You can also carry out a similar treatment in the spring.
