Sometimes, for various reasons, we need to leave the garden unseeded for a while. For some summer house residents, this prospect causes concern as during the "rest" period, the plot can become overgrown with weeds.

Experts from the National Research Center of the Institute of Agriculture of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences have developed recommendations on which plants should be sown in the garden during a forced or planned pause. These species will protect the site from the excessive spread of unwanted plants, and at the same time enrich the soil with nutrients.

In general, professional agronomists recommend giving the land a rest every 3-4 years. A year-long pause will allow your garden or part of it to regain its qualities. After such a "vacation", it will provide you with an even better harvest.

And to ensure that the land does not lose its qualities while it is recovering, sow crops on it that will accumulate moisture in the soil and make it more loose and nutritious. Such crops include:

  • phacelia
  • mustard
  • oats
  • rapeseed
  • lupine
  • sweet peas

If you want to better restore the soil, some plants will also help you. Here's a list of crops that will help you accumulate additional nutrients in the soil:

  • lentils
  • beans
  • clover
  • sweet clover
  • soybeans
  • chickpeas
  • lentils

If your main goal is to prevent weeds from taking over the site, then you need species that will win the competition for a place in the sun. Here's what you should pay attention to in this case:

  • pea actively grows and prevents weeds from multiplying
  • vetch grows well in early spring
  • lupine enriches the soil and prevents unnecessary plants from entering the site
  • alfalfa is the best protector against weeds
