Ukrainian film nominated for Oscar for the second time in a row

Ukrainian documentary Porcelain War, directed by American Brendan Bellomo and Kharkiv-based Slava Leontyev, has been nominated for Oscar 2025. The film will compete for the Best Documentary.

This became known during the announcement of all nominations on YouTube. This is the second year in a row that a Ukrainian film will compete for the award in this category. At the last ceremony, 20 Days in Mariupol managed to get the statuette.

Porcelain War tells the story of three ceramic artists in Kharkiv at the beginning of the Russian invasion in 2022. The main characters - Slava Leontyev, his wife Anna Stasenko and their friend Andriy Stefanov - stayed in the city at the most dangerous moment.

They fought against the enemy using their delicate sense of beauty and making porcelain products that contrasted sharply with the ruins of buildings.

It is interesting that the artists were planned to be shown in a different context and before the full-scale war, but the realities of 2022 changed the plot. "When Russia attacked, we decided that we needed to tell a completely different story. We found out that they were staying in Ukraine, they were fine, they were going to continue making art, and that Slava was fighting back," says screenwriter Aniela Sidorska.

In addition to directing, Leontyev also helped to defend the city. He said, "We are Kharkiv citizens, we were born in Kharkiv, but we lived in Crimea for a long time. We were forced to return after the annexation. At the time, we did not have the opportunity to defend our territory... But at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, I already had some skills and could join the army. Since I am not so young and healthy anymore, I joined a group of ordinary people who went to the army to defend their homes and families."

The Ukrainian emphasized that it was important for their team to convey the truth about the war to a foreign audience, not to to get awards. Thus, feedback from viewers continues to inspire the filmmakers.

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival as part of the US Documentary Competition on January 20, 2024.
