These dots are called frites.

One of the most misunderstood elements of a car is the black dots that line the perimeter of the windows. Their purpose has long remained a mystery to drivers and passengers. After all, they are clearly not made for aesthetics – any extra object on the car window can be dangerous. So, they have a specific need. Then I would like to know what are the black dots on the car window for?

OBOZREVATEL solved this mystery. It turns out that this is indeed an element that has a strictly utilitarian purpose.

These dots are called frites. They are applied with ceramic paint, which is then baked in an oven for durability. That is why frit cannot be wiped off or scraped off the glass.

The main task of these dots is to protect the sealant layer adjacent to the glass from ultraviolet radiation. This element is made of polyurethane, which is sensitive to sunlight and loses its properties under its influence. Meanwhile, the task of the layer is to protect the car from water getting inside through the joints with the glass, as well as to hold the glass in place. So, frites solve this problem.

They also create a slight abrasiveness, which makes the sealant adhere much better than on completely smooth glass. Frites are also a decorative element that makes the sealant less noticeable. In some models, the frit is used to create a special protrusion on the glass near the rearview mirror, which additionally protects the driver from the glare of the sun. Thus, this element really did appear on the auto glass for a reason.
