Weekend in the capital of fashion and beauty: what to visit in Milan in the fall of 2024
"A shopaholic's paradise" is how the Italian town is often called. Exquisite shop windows, stylish boutiques, and, of course, famous brands. But not only these things attract the attention of tourists! Today, we're going to tell you what attractions you should definitely see while traveling.
Church of San Maurizio
The shrine was built in the XVI century. For a long time it served as part of a Benedictine monastery. Inside is a painted cycle of frescoes dating back to 1500-1600. Some of them were created by the artist Bernardino Luini.
Travelers can also see the nuns' hall. Namely, the walls depicting Saints Catherine and Agatha, the wedding in Cana of Galilee, and other church images. There is also an organ here that was made in 1554.
Santa Maria delle Grazie
The church was built from 1466 to 1492. The project was designed by architect Gioinforte Solari. The most popular attraction is Leonardo da Vinci's fresco The Last Supper. It is located in the refectory of the monks' house.
But keep in mind that to get inside, you need to book a ticket in advance.
Sforza Castle
One of the main symbols of the city. It was built by Duke Francesco Sforza in the XV century. The palace was once considered the military citadel of Europe. Today it houses a complex of museums: prehistory, ancient and applied arts, musical instruments, furniture, and others. There is also a bookstore and libraries.
Tourists will also be able to see Michelangelo Buonarroti's latest work, the sculpture "Milanese Pietà". It was exhibited in the hall of the old Spanish hospital Ospedale Spagnolo.
National Pinacotheque of Brera
An art gallery with works by prominent European artists. Here you can find paintings by Raphael Santi, Pietro da Cortona, Giovanni Bellini, Veronese, Giambattista Pittoni, and other artists. The exhibition hall is located on the second floor of the prestigious Academy of Arts.
The building was founded in the late eighteenth century. In 1809, it was opened to the public.
Today, it houses frescoes dating back to 1300-1400 from the Mocchirolo Chapel and paintings by Gaudenzio Ferrari and Bernardino Luini, a student of Leonardo da Vinci.
Milan Cathedral
One of the largest and most famous Gothic churches in the world. Its construction lasted almost six centuries - from the XIV to the XIX. The shrine is striking in scale: more than 135 spires and almost 3,400 statues adorn the facade. The main feature of the attraction is its detailed architecture and luxurious interior.
Here, travelers can see huge stained-glass windows depicting scenes from the Bible. By the way, Cardinal and saint of the Catholic Church Carlo Borromeo is buried in the tomb. He was buried in a crystal coffin.
Poldi-Pezzoli Museum
Located in an old palace that used to be the residence of Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli, a man with a passion for art and collecting.
During the Second World War, the building was severely damaged. However, the bulk of the collection was saved. Each room is dedicated to a separate theme or period. There are paintings of Italian and European art. In particular, the Madonna and Child by Lorenzo Lotto and Calvary by Alvise Vivarini. There are also unique exhibits here: Renaissance furniture, antique ceramics, armor, carpets, and weapons.
Basilica of St. Ambrose
One of the oldest churches in Milan, built in 379-386. Later, the shrine was reconstructed and the apse was decorated with mosaics. In the XII century it was rebuilt in a new way – in the Romanesque style.
Here travelers will be able to see two towers, which were used to gather people for mass. Inside, there is a mosaic of Christ Pantocrator, the Almighty.
Sempione Park
The attraction was built on the site of a former palace. Horse races and celebrations used to be held here. In the time of Napoleon, the city began to green up. That's when the idea to create a natural center came up.
The Civic Aquarium of Milan, the Palace of Arts, and the panoramic Branca Tower, which was designed in 1933, are located on its territory. By the way, you can see the Alps from the top.
