WBO president says Lomachenko plans to end his career
Former world champion in three weight categories Vasyl Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KOs) is going to announce his retirement shortly. This categorical decision of the Ukrainian was influenced by a painful defeat in a fight against Devin Haney (30-0, 15 KOs) for all the lightweight belts.
This was announced by President Francisco Valcárcel during a conference of the World Boxing Organization (WBO). The corresponding video was published on the WBO YouTube channel.
At the same time, the official questioned whether Lomachenko would do so for sure, as he had previously planned to return to the ring next year. "I was told that Lomachenko will end his career. You know, I have my doubts. We'll see," Valcárcel told the conference participants.
As a reminder, Vasyl Lomachenko lost to Devin Haney by unanimous decision, which caused a lot of controversy among fans and experts. The unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (20-0, 13 KOs) called it a robbery.
American boxer and trainer Russ Anber said that he watched the fight between Vasyl and Devin three times and gave the victory to Lomachenko each time. The WBO stripped the Ukrainian of the first place in its rankings. At the same time, the World Boxing Council (WBC) unexpectedly awarded Lomachenko the championship fight.
Devin Haney was mocked on Twitter after he announced his support for Ukraine and his intention to donate to our country. In addition, the American unexpectedly started talking about revenge with Lomachenko.
As OBOZ.UA reported earlier, Vasyl Lomachenko's promoter Bob Arum announced the boxer's decision to call it quits.
