The Ukrainian defeated Fury twice

The World Boxing Council (WBC) has named Ukrainian unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs) the best fighter of the year. The organization reminded that our compatriot managed to defeat Tyson Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) in May, collecting all the division belts, and defend his titles in December.

"On May 2024, Usyk achieved boxing history by becoming the undisputed cruiserweight and heavyweight champion after defeating Tyson Fury in an epic fight. Usyk successfully defended his WBC Heavyweight belt last December," the council's page on X, formerly known as Twitter, reads.

The WBC also named the first confrontation between the Ukrainian and the British as the fight of 2024. Usyk won by split decision, knocking Fury out in the ninth round.

"Usyk defeated Fury by split decision in a dramatic battle to capture the undisputed championship at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia as part of #RiyadhSeason," the organization explained its choice.
