Vet names five dog breeds with the shortest life expectancy: one of them lives only 5 years

Anna BoklajukNews

Veterinarian Amir Anvari has published the top five dog breeds with the shortest life expectancy. One of them lives only 5 years, while others live up to 10.

The list of short-lived breeds, which Anvari posted on his TikTok, includes the St. Bernard, Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound, Bernese Sennenhund, and Dogo de Bordeaux. The veterinarian sadly noted that he owns a dog of one of these breeds.

According to the expert, St. Bernards and Great Danes live from seven to ten years, Irish Wolfhounds and Bernese Sennenhunds - from six to eight years, and Dogue de Bordeaux (or Bordeaux for short) - from five to eight years.

"Five years!!! It's just wild... I have a Great dane... I hope she will live longer than seven years," the veterinarian captioned his video.

In a few days, the video gained almost 800 thousand views. In the comments, users share their stories about dogs of these breeds, telling both about losses and the fact that there are cases when their pets live longer than the period specified by the veterinarian.

According to the Irish Star, according to the British veterinary charity PDSA, St. Bernards are known as "gentle giants" who can live well and long in most families, provided they have enough space for these large dogs. However, due to their size and breed characteristics, they are prone to various health problems.

As for Great Danes, according to the PDSA, they are a large working breed that is loved for their giant size but gentle and sweet nature. They are also susceptible to certain health problems, most commonly stomach problems.

Irish Wolfhounds are considered a large and strong breed, but they are known for their kindness. These dogs usually live less than 10 years and are prone to heart disease problems.

Bernese Sennenhunds are prone to bone-related problems. These can lead to arthritis, spinal problems, and gradual paralysis of the hind limbs. Nevertheless, these dogs are considered to be very kind, even though they are huge in size, and can become true family friends.

The PDSA describes the Dogue de Bordeaux as a large but calm dog that may appear intimidating but is actually kind and gentle. Despite their good looks, their wrinkled muzzles have been selectively bred, leading to potential health problems.

In fact, a dog of any breed lives less than a human, and probably every owner has experienced the death of their pet. However, if you have decided that a furry animal will appear in your home, you should conduct a thorough research and learn everything about the breed you are interested in.
