Usyk sensationally lost to an American boxer. The details of the fight with the two-time world champion became known
Shawn Porter, a two-time welterweight boxing world champion, IBF (2013-2014) and WBC (2018-2019) titlist, recalled how he defeated Oleksandr Usyk in 2006. At the time, both were about 20 years old and in the early stages of their amateur careers.
Porter said on his podcast The PorterWay that he was able to outbox the Ukrainian despite his size advantage. The 37-year-old American clarified that there was no footage of the fight.
"Now I'm about 5'7". I was about the same then, unlike Usyk. The Ukrainian was not as tall as I am now - somewhere around 183 cm. With a weight of 75 kg, he looked thin. In those days, we had a scoring system where three out of five judges pressed a button at the same time to record the points. In amateur boxing, there were a lot of punches, but not many points. That's how it was. It was a close fight throughout. It was a two- or three-point gap throughout," Porter said.
Shawn is pleased that he won this intense match thanks to the help of his coach, who pointed out the Ukrainian's vulnerability.
"I don't remember who won each round, but I remember the key events. I was coached by my father, and we had another guy, Dan Campbell. He was the coach of the 2008 Olympics. ["He didn't say much, but before the fourth round, before I came out and the gong sounded, he said, 'Shawn, if you stay in line with him, the right straight will definitely go in - if you throw a straight right, you'll hit him and you can get him,'" the former boxer said.
Porter is still excited to say that's exactly what happened.
"We were moving, we were doing our thing, and I hit Usyk with a right hand, and he backed off. I continued to attack and eventually won with a score of 23-20. It was a great fight. I guarantee that this fight was worth it for an amateur fight. It was a great competitive fight," the American fighter summed up.
In 2007, Porter won the middleweight gold medal at the Golden Gloves National Tournament, but the following year he turned professional without competing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The American later became a two-time welterweight world champion before retiring in 2021 after being stopped in the 10th round by Terence Crawford.
Usyk had much more success as an amateur, winning light heavyweight gold at the 2008 European Championships before moving up to heavyweight to win gold medals at the 2011 World Cup and 2012 Olympics. He then turned professional, where he remains undefeated as the absolute champion.
