The fight will not take place this year
WBA, WBO and IBF titles holder Oleksandr Usyk (20-0, 13 KOs) will not hold a fight against WBC champion Tyson Fury (34-0-1, 24 KOs) this year. Initially, it was announced that the mega-fight for the absolute heavyweight championship would take place on December 23, 2023.
In an interview with iFL TV, Oleksandr Krasiuk confirmed this information, clarifying that the new date is postponed to early 2024.
"We still have time to prepare. Now Oleksandr is shooting footage for the upcoming fight and is returning to his training camp in Spain. I think more details will be announced soon. Therefore, we should not expect specific dates until next week," said Krasiuk.
The promoter is disappointed with this turn of events.
"We expected the fight to take place on December 23, in accordance with the signed agreement between both parties. However, our experience in the boxing world has taught us that you cannot force a fighter to enter the ring if he is not ready to fight. He will certainly never do it by force, but the whole world is waiting for this significant fight. So we need to be flexible," - Krasiuk summarized.
According to the British portal talkSport, the historic confrontation, which will put four division championship belts on the line for the first time, will take place on February 17 next year.
In addition, it is known that the fight between Usyk and Fury will take place at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, where on October 28, the Gypsy King defeated boxing debutant Francis Nganna (0-1, 0 KOs) by split decision.
The Cameroonian knocked Tyson out in the third round, the seventh time in his career that the Briton has been knocked out.
The media reported that the British boxer is facing a $240 million lawsuit if he refuses to fight Usyk on December 23.
