"Ukrzaliznytsia" stopped selling train tickets to Poland: what is the reason and will the service be resumed

"Ukrzaliznytsia" will stop selling tickets for the Rava-Ruska – Warsaw route starting September 22. This is due to the expiration of the agreement with the Polish company SKPL, which operated this route.

This was announced by Viktor Halchynskyi, a member of the board of "Line 102." Negotiations between the parties to extend the agreement are ongoing, but no consensus has been reached so far.

The Rava-Ruska – Warsaw route, which has been operating for almost a year, is the fastest connection between Lviv and the Polish capital. The Polish Ministry of the Interior once expressed support for the safety of this route, emphasizing its importance for regional transportation. Despite this, the unsatisfactory speed of negotiations on the extension of the route jeopardizes its further functioning.

Currently, the Polish state-owned railway company PKP Intercity has expressed interest in operating this route and has applied to the Polish regulator, Urząd Transportu Kolejowego. However, the chances of getting a permit by September 21 remain minimal. Both parties, Ukrzaliznytsia and SKPL, claim that they intend to keep this successful route, but negotiations are difficult.

In addition, the planned local international connection on the Przemysl-Khyriv-Zagórz Euro-gauge, which was scheduled for December 2024, is also under threat. Previous plans for a promotional run of the Polish train were canceled due to the decision of the Polish Border Guard.

Recent developments emphasize that the "Line 102 syndrome" – blocking projects due to lack of agreements – is becoming increasingly evident in Ukrainian-Polish relations, especially in the field of rail transport. Inconsistencies in border control and unresolved issues with infrastructure projects threaten the further implementation of the planned connections.
