On November 17, Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which led to power outages in many regions. Emergency blackouts were introduced in Kyiv, Odesa, Volyn, Vinnytsia, Donetsk and Dnipro regions.

This was reported by DTEK. "In case of changes, we will promptly inform you," the company said.

At the same time, the KCMA explained that due to the threat of a missile attack, Kyiv may introduce emergency power outage schedules. They called it a preventive measure. Electricity was also cut off in Zhytomyr, Poltava and other regions of the country.

Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko said that on Sunday , Russia launched another massive attack on Ukraine' s energy system. In particular, the enemy targeted electricity generation and transmission facilities throughout Ukraine. "The transmission system operator has urgently introduced emergency power outages. Where possible, rescuers and power engineers are already working to eliminate the consequences. Light will win!" he wrote.

Russia also shelled DTEK's thermal power plants and severely damaged the equipment. According to preliminary information, there were no casualties. The attacks severely damaged the plants' equipment. After the shelling ended, employees of the companies promptly began to repair the damage and restore the equipment.

The attack covered a large area of Ukraine, affecting important energy facilities in different regions. These are:

  • Volyn region: according to the Volyn Regional Military Administration, there were hits to energy infrastructure facilities. Transformer substations were damaged, which led to power outages;
  • Odesa region: in Odesa, several hits were recorded on generation facilities, which led to the stoppage of electric transport and massive power outages. According to the local operator, outage schedules do not apply in such cases, so it may take a long time to restore power supply. Queues formed near the pump rooms due to the interruptions in water supply;
  • Rivne region: hits to the energy infrastructure in the region led to power outages in some areas;
  • Kryvyi Rih: arrivals in the city caused large-scale power outages. The local authorities urged residents to remain calm and prepare for possible prolonged power outages;
  • Vinnytsia region: there were hits to critical infrastructure facilities. Preliminary reports indicate that there were no casualties, but there was an emergency power outage.

In Odesa, where the airplanes caused significant damage, all electric transport has stopped. The power outage has caused problems with water supply, especially in areas where pumping stations cannot be connected to generators. Most of the pumping stations have been switched to autonomous power sources, but this does not always ensure a stable water supply.

Once the power supply is restored, water supply will be resumed in the coming hours. In the meantime, residents of Odesa are forced to queue at the pump rooms, which indicates the seriousness of the situation.

Earlier, CEO of Yasno energy company Serhiy Kovalenko explained that preventive blackouts do not depend on the current deficit in the system, but on the actions of the aggressor. "The answer to the question "Are we going to shut down every time now?" (during shelling - Ed.). We will shut down as much as necessary. Believe me, no one wants to do this just to make people angry. But, as you rightly said, we are at war in our country. So we apologize for the inconvenience," he said.

As a reminder, last night after 03:00, the Russians took 17 Tu-95 strategic bombers into the air, and in the morning they launched missiles. The enemy also launched Kalibr missiles from missile carriers in the Black Sea. Explosions were heard in a number of regions of Ukraine after repeated alarms.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, on November 16, the Zaporizhzhia NPP, which is under occupation, was again on the verge of blackout. The damaged infrastructure complicates the operation of the power system across the country.
