Ukrainian with a new world record wins gold at the 2024 Paralympics

The Ukrainian national team has won its third gold medal of the 2024 Paralympics. Swimmer Mykhailo Serbin became the first in the 100-meter backstroke in the S11 class (visual impairment). The 20-year-old from Kharkiv swam the distance in 1:05.84 minutes, improving his own world record of 2023 by 0.17 seconds.

Serbin made a decisive breakthrough to the first step of the podium in the last 50 meters of the course. Losing to three rivals, Mikhail was able to take the lead and win.

"Another Ukrainian, Danylo Chufarov, took the bronze medal, 1.19 seconds behind the champion. Czech David Kratochvill rounded out the Ukrainians in the top three.

Mikhail Serbin is a two-time world champion (2022, 2023). In 2024, he won the European Championships for the first time (bronze).

As OBOZ.UA reported, in 2021 at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo, 17-year-old Serbin was not a favorite, but he had an outstanding race, winning gold in the 100-meter breaststroke.
