Sensation from the Ukrainian at the Australian Open-2024: knocked out the world ranking leaders
Ukrainian tennis player Denys Molchanov and Serbian tennis player Nikola Cacic created a sensation in the men's doubles at the Australian Open 2024. In the second round of the Melbourne Grand Slam tournament, the Ukrainian-Serbian duo defeated the ATP doubles ranking leaders Austin Krajicek and Ivan Dodig of Croatia 6-4, 6-7(8), 7-6(7).
Krajicek and Dodig are currently ranked first and second in the world doubles classification, while Molchanov and Čacic are at the bottom of the seventh tier, but managed to put up a fight against the competition favorites. The match on the Australian court lasted 2 hours and 40 minutes and ended with an unexpected victory for the underdogs.
The 36-year-old Denys will play in the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. Nikola will try to repeat his best result at tournaments of this level. In 2021, the Serb reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros.
It should be noted that this is Molchanov's third appearance at the Australian Open doubles. In 2012, he and his compatriot Alexander Dolgopolov lost in the first round, and five years ago he reached the second round with Slovakian Igor Zelenay.
In the next round, Denys and Nicola will play the Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavasori, who today defeated the French tandem of Nicolas Mayu and Édouard Roger-Vasselin.
