Ukrainian polar explorers clear a snowy "portal" to the ocean: the video went viral
Ukrainian polar explorers traditionally cleared the snowy "portal" to the ocean, as they do every December. To be more precise, the passage from the Vernadsky Arctic station to the second berth of the Jetty.
This passage is mostly used by researchers in the summer season (it is summer in Antarctica), when the number of sea trips significantly increases. The polar explorers shared an interesting video of the snowy "excavations" that has already taken over the network on Facebook.
In the post, the Ukrainian researchers joked that they were digging protective ditches against penguins. In fact, during the long winter, the road to the jet is heavily covered with snow. And although there was no record snowfall in the Vernadsky area this year, it still took a lot of work to pave the way to the ocean, experts say.
"The height of the ditch is mostly 1.9 meters, and in some places it reaches 2.3 meters. The length of the snowy "portal" is about 40 meters," the post says.
The polar explorers cleared the entire road with their own hands, because, unfortunately, snowplows do not work in conditions of such snow depth and uneven rocky ground.
"This is a great exercise," wrote one of the subscribers of the National Antarctic Science Center's Facebook page. Another commenter noted that it is a heavy physical activity. "My arms would have fallen off," emphasized the third and thanked the researchers for their work.
"The process took more than one day, and the whole team took part in it – both polar explorers and polar explorers. An exception was made only for the cook, who had to feed this hungry company after physical activity," the Vernadsky scientists said.
It is interesting that before the start of the polar "excavations," a draw was held among all participants to determine who would work in which area. Experts say that although all the "plots" are the same in length, the snow depth on them is slightly different.
The main berth, which polar explorers call the "slip" and where a powerful crane is installed, is already being prepared for receiving cargo from the Noosphere. Due to the bottom relief, the ship cannot approach the station's berths, so everything is delivered to the island by motorboats.
We remind you that the flagship of the Ukrainian scientific fleet left Cape Town on December 12. It is expected to arrive at Vernadsky on New Year's Eve..
