Two of the greatest miracles of Jesus Christ found to have "plausible scientific basis"

Jesus' miracles explained

A new study has provided scientific confirmation for two of the most significant miracles recorded in the Bible. Scientists have also confirmed the chronology of one of the biblical miracles that took place in the Sea of Galilee, known today as Israel's Lake Kinneret.

The study explains a precedent for the mass killing of fish by a lack of oxygen in the water. This potentially allowed Christ to perform the "Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes" and later the "Miraculous Catch of Fish," writes The New York Post.

"Current understanding of the physical limnology [ecosystem] of Lake Kinneret could provide a plausible scientific basis to those miracles," the authors of the study write. Both events, based on the Gospels - on the northwestern shore area of the sea around Tabgha - involved Jesus Christ creating a surplus of fish for his disciples when they ran out of food.

In a later incident described in the Gospel of John after Christ's resurrection, the apostles' nets were "full of 153 large fish, but even with so many the net was not torn," scientists say.

They speculate that a strong wind stirred up the lower part of the water, leading to an oxygen-free state, or lack of oxygen, which eventually suffocated the fish, causing them to rise to the surface and be extremely easy to get by the nets.

"The Sea of Galilee is a stratified lake. The upper layer is warm and oxygenated, while the lower layer is cold and lacks oxygen," said researcher Yael Amitai.

According to experts, similar cases of "fish kill" have occurred since the 1990s, including in Lake Erie and the Neuse River Estuary in North Carolina. And last year, they were also recorded in the Tzalmon estuary. This is evidenced by research that used 3D modeling to scan the lake.

Therefore, the scientists emphasize that a natural, though quite rare, phenomenon "may explain the appearance of large numbers of easy-to-collect fish close to the shore described in the biblical narratives."

As for the biblical account of the miraculous appearance of the "Loaves and Fishes," researchers believe that this miracle - the only one recorded in all four canonized Gospels - most likely occurred in late spring or early summer. After all, it is at this time that there are sharp changes in temperature and the water deepens at this time, bringing more dead fish to the surface.
