Trump declares his intention to punish the EU for "terrible behavior": new duties announced
US President Donald Trump is going to impose duties on goods from the European Union. He justified his intention by arguing that Europe has been "treating the United States terribly."
Trump made the statement on Friday, January 31, while talking to journalists, according to Suspilne. According to the head of state, such a step will help the United States remedy the situation with the trade deficit with the EU.
Trump made the statement about his intentions to impose duties on EU goods while answering questions from the media.
"Will I impose tariffs on the EU? Do you want an honest answer or a political answer? Absolutely. The EU has treated us terribly. They don't take our cars. They don't take our agricultural products. In fact, they don't take almost anything. We have a huge deficit with the EU. So we're going to do something very significant with the EU," the US president said.
According to Trump, this step will allow the United States to remedy the situation with the trade deficit.
Earlier, the new US president announced the introduction of a 25% duty on imports from Mexico and Canada starting February 1. He cited the flow of migrants and the drug fentanyl as the reasons for his decision. At the same time, Trump noted that 25% is the minimum duty and it may increase.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, on the other hand, said that Canada is ready for any scenario of a trade war with the United States. And if the United States imposes duties on its goods, it will give a mirror response to American imports.
