Toyota is considering rebranding its first all-electric car, the bZ4X. The model, which will be introduced in 2022, immediately raised many questions about the name. It sounds unusual and complex, which created problems with brand recognition.

However, Toyota explained that bZ stands for "beyond zero emissions," 4 indicates the size, and X stands for crossover. However, even with the explanations, the name did not become popular, Motor1.com writes.

According to Patrick Ryan, Regional Director of Toyota Canada Inc., the company is already preparing to rebrand the electric car. Details of the process and possible timing of changes are currently unknown. Toyota representatives have so far refrained from making official comments.

It is expected that the name update may be associated with the middle of the model's life cycle, approximately in 2026. Until then, the bZ4X will remain on the market in its original form. Interestingly, the electric SUV shares a platform with the Lexus RZ and Subaru Solterra, which have simpler and more understandable names.

The bZ4X's specifications remain competitive. The maximum range of the model is 252 miles in the standard version, and for other Lexus and Subaru variants, it reaches up to 296 miles. Toyota also offers a front-wheel drive version, which distinguishes it from Lexus and Subaru models with two-engine all-wheel drive.

The bZ4X model is already available for customization for 2025, so its rebranding will not affect near-term deliveries. However, this decision can significantly improve the company's marketing strategy by making the electric vehicle more recognizable and understandable to consumers.

The rebranding could be a step towards increasing the popularity of Toyota's electric vehicles, which are still inferior to competitors in this segment. It is expected that the updated name will be simpler and will meet the standards of customer perception.
