This Italian city was recognized as "the most walkable" in 2024: even winter will not interfere with recreation here

City vacations are a chance to immerse yourself in the history and culture of a place of interest and admire its architectural wonders. However, experienced tourists say that it is best to do this while walking, not while watching from a bus window.

According to the Express, a study conducted this year revealed the 30 most walkable cities in the world. And Florence, Italy, took the first place in this ranking.

The cradle of the Renaissance is home to many artistic and architectural masterpieces of that time. And the city's compact layout means that all the main attractions are within one kilometer of each other. That is, such architectural monuments as the Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, Piazza del Duomo, and Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore are within just a 10-minute walk of each other.

It will take you only two hours to walk around the entire center of Florence and admire its beauty. Walking tours with a more detailed study of the history of the sights last from 6 to 7 hours. However, the main advice for those who want to get to know Florence better is not to do everything at once.

In particular, Time Out magazine advises to set aside three days to explore the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore alone, which is how long the entrance ticket is valid for. Come back here to get a better look at the details of the architecture and dive deeper into the history of the building.

Florence offers its guests a rather pleasant climate. In the fall, it is warmer than in most European countries, although the main winter months are cool and wet. If you travel in October, you can enjoy a comfortable average daytime temperature of 21.7 °C.

If you don't know where to start your exploration of the city, Tripadvisor recommends starting with one of the three popular hiking routes: Iconic landmarks and standout food, History and intrigue: the Vasari Corridor, and Off-the-beaten-path Oltrarno. And don't forget to enjoy the famous wines of Tuscany.

Another seasonal local dish that cannot be overlooked in the fall is the white truffle from San Miniato. It appears on the menu of high-end restaurants in the fall months, along with chestnuts and porcini mushrooms. And if you want to enjoy Tuscan delicacies on your own, go to the Mercato Centrale market, where you will find sellers of wine, fruit, meat, fish, cheese, oil and spices on the ground floor. There is also a food court upstairs serving local cuisine.
