There is an absolute leader: which cities are most often mentioned in movies
Cities in films often determine the atmosphere, mood, and even the development of the plot. The choice of location for filming has a great impact on the perception of the story because a city can be not just a backdrop for events, but also a reflection of the internal state of characters or the personification of important themes. Some cities have already become real cinematic symbols: Paris is a city of romance, New York is the embodiment of the American dream, London is an ideal backdrop for historical films, and Tokyo is a city of contrasts.
Analysts at InsureandGo, researching the QuoDB database, identified the top cities most often mentioned in films of different genres throughout the history of cinema. In many movies, urban landscapes become an integral part of the story.
The most popular city in cinema
It turned out that the most popular city in cinema is Paris, with 33,078 references.
The city, often associated with romance, art, and history, has become a real symbol in world cinema. Its architecture, streets, embankments and iconic Eiffel Tower make Paris the perfect backdrop for many films, regardless of genre.
"Paris is the most popular city in movie history and the only French city in the top twenty. 'We will always have Paris' from the 1942 movie Casablanca is one of the most iconic phrases on the big screen," the authors of the study note.
For many people, Paris is the embodiment of a dream of an ideal city where the atmosphere of love, beauty, and inspiration reigns. That is why Paris often becomes the setting for romantic comedies and melodramas. Think of the movies "Amélie," "Before Sunset," "Paris, I Love You" – all of them are imbued with a special Parisian charm and tell love stories against the backdrop of the Eiffel Tower, Montmartre, and other famous places.
The French capital is often the setting for historical dramas and costume films. "The Queen," "Marie Antoinette," "Les Miserables" take viewers back in time, showing Paris of different eras.
Even in thrillers and action movies, Paris retains its special charm. "The Da Vinci Code," "Mission: Impossible," and "Taken" – in these films, Paris becomes the scene of exciting events, where heroes fight crime and solve mysteries.
London is second in this ranking with 30,624 movie references, and Rome is third (16,371). New York, surprisingly, took only 13th place in the top 20.
