A large arsenal in the Tver region was hit

On the night of September 18, powerful explosions occurred near the city of Toropets, Tver Region, followed by a large-scale fire with detonation. A partial evacuation of the population was announced in the city and its environs, and it also became known that Ukrainian drones had hit the arsenal of the Main Missile and Artillery Directorate of the Russian Defense Ministry, built in 2015.

This arsenal could have stored about 30 thousand tons of various munitions, including 122 mm Grad MLRS shells and 82 mm mines, as well as possibly anti-aircraft missiles and missiles from the DPRK. This was reported by a number of Telegram channels, including Oko Gora.

"I can congratulate you, this is the largest ammunition depot that we have managed to hit in our entire war. Judging by the size of the warehouse, which is about 7.76 km², there are rumors that up to 30 thousand tons of various chemical warfare agents were stored there. The 107th GRAU arsenal was often used to store 122-mm Grad MLRS shells and 82-mm mines," the publicist writes.

The author of the channel also drew attention to one of the photos that went viral, which recorded the detonation at the site of the fire: he believes that it indicates the storage of anti-aircraft missiles at the arsenal.

Head of the Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Andriy Kovalenko said that the Russians could have stored missiles received from the DPRK at the damaged warehouse.

"In a large warehouse in the city of Toropets in Tver region, the Russians stored missiles for Grad, S-300 and S-400, as well as manufactured ballistic missiles for Iskander, and began to create a stockpile of North Korean KN23s," he said.

Officially, Russia has not recognized the destruction of the 107th arsenal of the GRU. At night, local authorities announced the "fall of UAV debris" that fell so well that partial evacuations began in the surrounding settlements. Neither the local authorities nor the central state media mentioned where exactly the wreckage had fallen.

However, NASA images have appeared on the web, showing a rapid increase in fire on the territory of the arsenal.

It's no secret to the locals where the epicenter of the fire is located.

The Russian authorities, including representatives of the security forces, have indeed been actively promoting the "analog" arsenal, which was built in 2015 and cost the Russian budget almost 4 billion rubles. It was built "within the framework of a targeted program to improve the storage system for missiles, ammunition and explosives launched in 2012," writes the Russian publication "Agency". In total, the program planned to build 13 arsenals worth about 90 billion rubles.

"In 2018, Deputy Defense Minister Dmitry Bulgakov (currently detained on corruption charges and imprisoned - Ed.) said that each arsenal storage facility can store 240 tons of ammunition and missiles. "The arsenal allows us to shelter stocks of missiles and ammunition from external influence and ensure their safety and explosion and fire safety," he was quoted as saying by the Defense Ministry's Zvezda TV channel, the Agency reports.

Last night, residents of Toropets and the surrounding area were able to experience firsthand how "protected" and "explosion and fireproof" the new arsenals worth billions of rubles are. After all, the fire and detonations are still going on there.

The scale of the warehouse and the number of burning and detonating ammunition can be evidenced by the fact that monitoring services recorded a weak earthquake in Toropets, Tver Oblast, after the attack on the ammunition depot.

According to Volcanodiscovery, an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.8 was recorded in Toropets at 3.56 am. After that, there were 7 more weak tremors with a magnitude of 2 to 2.8.

As a reminder, OBOZ.UA collected everything we know about the destruction of the warehouses in the Tver region last night in one article. In particular, we wrote that the Russians complain about the complete destruction of the village next to the arsenal, as well as that the locals were cut off from evacuation - and so far they are waiting for boats to be sent for them, on the shore of a local lake.
