More than 100 years ago, St. Michael's Square in Kyiv looked a little different from what we are used to. In 1918, trams ran and stopped there, and trees grew at the entrance to the cathedral of the same name.

The old photo was posted in the community "Kyiv, a living being" on the social network Facebook. The public transportation line has not survived to this day.

"St. Michael's Square. 1918," the post says.

In the published photo, you can see the tram tracks that ran directly next to the monument to Princess Olha, what St. Michael's Cathedral looked like before it was destroyed by the Soviet government, and the Kyivans who were captured in the photo.

St.Michael's Square is one of the oldest squares in Kyiv. It was formed in the XII century in front of the entrance to St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery. The square took shape in its current form and size in the 1850s, after the space between St. Sophia and St. Michael's Cathedrals was divided by the building of the Seated Places. In 1869, the square was named St. Michael's.

As a reminder, there are many ways to look into the history of Kyiv and see its beauty. In particular, through the paintings of Ukrainian artist Oleksandr Khvostenko-Khvostov, in which he preserved views of the city in the 1950s.

The capital's Lybid River is mentioned in the chronicles of Kyivan Rus in 968. In the 1950s, its channel was not yet hidden by concrete slabs, and a road bridge was built in Vydubychi to allow cars to cross it.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, the Darnytsia railway station in Kyiv was built in the late 19th century, which turned the area into a famous vacation spot and summer cottage. The building itself looked like a fairy-tale house thanks to its interior and the surrounding forest.
