The writers of the cult TV series The Simpsons have announced that one of the show's most famous comedy gags is being discontinued. The American sitcom, which has been broadcasting since 1989 and has 35 seasons, will no longer show Homer strangling his son Bart.
It is reported by Metro UK. The decision was made due to the fact that "times have changed".
This comedy technique was first shown more than 30 years ago at the end of the first episode of The Simpsons and became one of the most common in the series. It consisted in the fact that when Bart made a joke or committed some kind of misdemeanor, Homer would exclaim "Why you little..." and put his hands to his son's throat.
Later, this joke was no longer "limited" to Bart, and Homer began to strangle other characters as well. "The Simpsons even called it an outdated method of punishment.
But now, it seems, we will no longer see the famous comedy trick on our screens. This was confirmed by a new episode of the sitcom.
In the third episode of the 35th season, Homer and Marge meet a new family on Evergreen Terrace - Homer greets the head of the family with a handshake. When the new neighbor compliments Homer on his strong grip, he tells Marge that the years of "strangling the boy have paid off." However, the protagonist turns to his new friend and explains: "Just kidding, I don't do that anymore - times have changed."
Fans who still watch The Simpsons praised the decision of the writers, noting that "now it is considered child abuse."
