The return of the legendary cartoon: the release date of the next "Ice Age" is known
The sixth installment of the "Ice Age" animated franchise has received an updated premiere date. At the same time, it pushed out the next installment of "Star Wars" from Disney's schedule.
According to THR, the studio removed the planned space saga film from its 2026 release calendar. Instead, Ice Age 6 took its place in the premiere schedule and will be released on December 18, 2026.
The fact that the sixth part of the prehistoric animals' adventures is in development was announced by Disney last week at the D23 Brazil conference. It is known that Ray Romano, Queen Latifah, and John Leguizamo will voice their characters – mammoth Manny and his partner mammoth Ellie, as well as megalomaniac Sid, respectively.
Disney acquired the "Ice Age" franchise as part of its purchase of 21st Century Fox. The new film will be the first premiere in the series since the deal closed in 2019.
Also last week, Disney announced that it is working on a new "Star Wars" trilogy. Simon Kinberg has already been commissioned to write and produce the script. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy will also produce the trilogy. THR has also learned from its sources that these films will include new characters and will not be a continuation of the previous Skywalker saga, which covered episodes 1 through 9 of the franchise.
At the same time, Daisy Ridley's character Rey Skywalker will get her own movie. Director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is currently working on this spinoff. This project was first mentioned at the "Star Wars" Celebration in London in April 2023.
Earlier this year, it became known that on May 22, 2026, the film "The Mandalorian and the Grogu," directed by Jon Favreau and starring Pedro Pascal, will be released in theaters. The film is also a spinoff and is based on the popular Disney+ streaming series "The Mandalorian," the third season of which was released last year.
