The new AirPods may have cameras: Apple is serious about development
A camera in portable headphones may seem like a strange idea. However, there are rumors that Apple is seriously considering equipping its AirPods with cameras.
According to MacRumors, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, who is close to the company, told about this in his newsletter. He only briefly mentioned the possibility of tiny cameras in AirPods in an issue dedicated to Apple's future ambitions in the field of wearable devices. However, Gurman did not explain what the cameras would be used for.
Other rumors suggest that the tiny cameras will not be designed to take photos or videos. They will serve as infrared sensors. In a blog post from June 2024, Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple plans to mass-produce new AirPods with infrared cameras by 2026. He said that the infrared camera component will be similar to the Face ID receiver in the iPhone.
According to Kuo, the new AirPods with infrared cameras will provide improved spatial sound with the Apple Vision Pro headset. "For example, when a user is watching a video with Vision Pro and wearing these new AirPods, if they turn their head in a certain direction, the sound source in that direction can be highlighted to enhance the spatial audio/computing experience," the insider wrote.
Infrared cameras could also potentially provide gesture control in the air, allowing you to interact with the device using hand gestures. If the rumored timing is correct and Apple does not go beyond the stated schedule, the new AirPods with infrared cameras could be launched as early as 2026 or 2027.
