The mountain known for witch gatherings and the most famous street: what Kyiv looked like in the 1860s
St. Andrew's Descent and Castle Hill (Zamkova Hora, Lysa Hora) are an integral part of Kyiv's history. And photos from the 1860s show what these iconic places of the capital looked like back then.
They were posted on Facebook. These days, these locations have changed quite a bit.
"Kyiv. 1860s. Castle Hill and St. Andrew's Descent," reads the caption to the post.
The published photos show that at that time there was a wall on Castle Hill, the remains of which can still be found today. Also, there were private one-story houses on the street.
It is worth adding that Castle Hill is one of the most mystical places in Kyiv. According to one legend, witches were even executed and buried here in the old days.
