The key to cleanliness: what things must be removed before guests arrive
When guests are on the doorstep, the first thing we think about is whether our home is clean enough to receive them. And we start frantically cleaning everything.
While cleanliness experts say that it's enough to clean a few areas in the house to avoid worrying about its overall condition. Southern Living interviewed experts to find out what exactly needs to be done before guests arrive so that the house looks tidy and doesn't take a lot of time and effort.
Entrance hall
This is the entry point to your home that your guest will see first, so it's important to make a good impression and give them a warm welcome. Place your shoes neatly here, put all the little things in their places, and wash the floor. If there are any glass surfaces in this area, such as mirrors or windows, quickly clean them with a special product.
The floor
It doesn't matter if your guest walks around in shoes or barefoot, they will feel if the floor is dirty. Therefore, quickly vacuum all the rooms where you invite them and go over them with a damp mop. But do the final cleaning of the floor last. If you need to wipe the countertops and dust off, all the dirt will fall on the floor. That's why professionals clean from top to bottom.
Garbage
Collect various wrappers, empty packages, pieces of paper, and other garbage from the premises. And be sure to empty the trash can – it can give off an odor. If you have time, wash the trash can with a solution of dishwashing detergent in warm water. And be sure to wipe it dry before putting a clean bag in it.
Kitchen
Clean the kitchen depending on how much time you have before the first guests arrive. What you should definitely do is wash dirty dishes, wipe down all countertops, and remove any excess from the surfaces – this will make the room look tidy right away. If necessary, clean the drain pipe – it can also produce an unpleasant odor.
Bathroom
The first place your guests will almost certainly look is the bathroom. Therefore, washing the plumbing will be a very important step in preparation. Don't forget to wipe the mirror as well. Stained glass will ruin the impression, even if everything else is crystal clear. Make sure there is enough toilet paper near the toilet. You can complete a quick clean by lighting a scented candle.
Hard surfaces
Hard surfaces such as coffee tables, televisions, mirrors, blinds, and consoles collect dust easily and often go unnoticed. Give them a quick check and run a damp cloth over them if necessary to tidy them up.
Light switches and door handles
These surfaces collect a lot of bacteria because we touch knobs and switches with our hands all the time. Treat them with disinfectant wipes or antiseptic and polish them with a microfiber towel.
Furniture
This is especially important for those with pets and small children. Check furniture surfaces for dust and stains and clean them with a suitable product. Also, vacuum all sofas and armchairs with an upholstered furniture brush. And do not forget to remove the pillows from them and clean under them.
