The heaviest giant panther in history was caught in Florida. Photo
Wildlife conservationists have accidentally captured the heaviest Florida panther ever documented. This happened during a long-term research program that tracks panther movements, health, and population dynamics.
According to representatives of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) on their Facebook page, the panther was an adult male weighing 75 kilograms. They put a collar on the panther, conducted a comprehensive health assessment, including blood tests and tissue samples for genetic analysis, and released it.
Even though Florida panthers are the official animal mascot of the Sunshine State, only 120 to 230 of them remain in the wild, Live Science reports. They are an endangered subspecies of puma. Historically, their range extended from the Sunshine State to Louisiana and Arkansas, but hunting in recent centuries has decimated their population. Therefore, this project provides important data for the conservation of endangered Florida panthers.
The collars that biologists put on panthers have GPS sensors and allow researchers to track the animals' movements, survival, reproduction, and habitat use. This, in turn, helps inform science-based management strategies that are crucial to the recovery of this population.
Typically, males of Florida panthers (Puma concolor coryi) weigh 45 to 73 kg, while females weigh 32 to 45 kg.
