The EU has "invented" a plan to refuse Russian gas: Reuters has learned the details
The European Union (EU) is seeking to increase gas purchases from other countries, including the United States. The goal is to replace supplies from Russia.
This is reported by Reuters. It is noted that the EU also intends to expand the use of renewable energy sources to reduce overall dependence on fuel.
"Instead of spending taxpayers' money on gas, the income from which goes to Putin's budget to wage war ... we must ensure the production of our own energy. The task is to make sure that this energy is cheap and not Russian," the statement said.
It is emphasized that according to EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen, the EU still needs gas. Therefore, the bloc needs to "look for sources other than Russia". In particular, he noted, it could mean increased imports from the United States.
Earlier, the Financial Times reported that the European Union is considering a temporary cap on gas prices. The reason is its record growth: in mid-February, the cost of the resource in Europe reached a 2-year high.
However, it was noted that the idea of a price cap has caused concern in energy and financial circles, whose representatives believe that it will "undermine confidence" in the European gas trading system and force market participants to switch to alternative mechanisms outside the EU.
"The European Commission is considering restrictions as part of the discussions on a 'clean industrial agreement'. The document should set out ways to support the EU's heavy industry, which has faced several problems, including aggressive US trade measures and plans to transition the EU to green energy," analysts said.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, for its part, Ukraine is ready to provide the United States with its underground gas storage facilities (UGS) for storing its liquefied natural gas (LNG). According to the country's authorities, this will ensure Europe's energy independence.
