The best tennis player in the world refused to play at Roland Garros and withdrew from the tournament
World number one Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the French Open tennis tournament. The 37-year-old Belgrade native ended his performances at Roland Garros due to a leg injury, the tournament's press service reports.
The reigning champion suffered a torn medial meniscus in his five-set match in the 1/8 finals against Argentine Francisco Serundolo (6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3).
Djokovic was scheduled to play a quarterfinal match with Casper Ruud on June 5. Now, the Norwegian has reached the semifinals on a waiver.
After reaching the quarterfinals of Roland Garros, the world number one set two historical records. Novak became the first to reach the top eight at majors (59) and has the most wins at tournaments of this level (370).
As OBOZ.UA reported, a month ago, Djokovic suffered a head injury after a match at the Masters tournament in Rome. In the 1/32 finals, the Serb defeated Corentin Moutet 6-3, 6-1, and after the victory he was signing autographs when a bottle flew towards him from the stands.
It should be noted that on May 26, Ukraine's fourth seed Lesia Tsurenko (WTA No. 44) was unable to continue her Roland Garros first round match against Donna Vekic (WTA No. 40) due to injury, withdrawing from the tournament.
