The best crossovers: 2024 rating
Crossovers combine the comfort of passenger cars with some of the capabilities of SUVs. The higher ground clearance makes it easy to overcome bumps and curbs, and the spacious interior and luggage compartment make the crossover an ideal choice for family trips and travel.
Most new models are equipped with modern safety and comfort systems, such as climate control, cruise control, and multimedia systems. The market offers a large number of crossover models from different manufacturers, which allows everyone to choose a car according to their preferences. TopGear has published a rating of the best cars in this segment.
Volvo EX30
The most outstanding EX30 model is the twin-engine version with 422 hp. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes 3.6 seconds. The EX30 is based on an electric platform that is shared with other Geely brands, including Smart #1. The EX30 has its own safety standard. So far, the car is manufactured only in China, but from 2025, production will begin in Belgium. The most striking thing about the interior is its simplicity. This helps reduce the number of parts, making it more affordable.
The base model has LFP battery cathodes. They use more minerals with less energy-intensive mining and production than the longer-range 64 kWh NMC battery. The Volvo factory and almost all suppliers use fully renewable energy. The range is 344 km WLTP for the base version, while with the larger capacity package, you get 445-476 km, depending on the specification.
Dacia Duster
This is the third generation of Dacia's breakthrough hit, the small family crossover. The new platform means better noise insulation, more space, and more protection. It also includes an electronic accident prevention package: automatic emergency braking, speed limit recognition, and lane departure prevention.
The new structure is also configured for multiple power sources. The basic configuration is a dual-fuel gasoline/LPG system. There is also a gasoline turbo hybrid with a manual transmission with two or four-wheel drive. A new option for the Duster is a gasoline full hybrid front-wheel drive.
Kia EV3
Thanks to the strange oblong alloy wheels and massive wheel arches, the car looks distinctive and futuristic, but the manufacturer does not resort to fake grilles or other cheap life hacks. All EV3s are currently available only with front-wheel drive, with a single 201 hp engine that provides quiet operation.
The standard range battery provides a capacity of 58 Wh and a range of 434 km. The 81 kWh battery increases the range to 600 km. The most popular models are the GT-line and GT-line S. They have a larger battery as standard, as well as 19-inch instead of 17-inch wheels, faux leather seats, tinted windows, and LED headlights.
Ford Puma
Puma is a compact crossover based on the Fiesta. In February 2024, Ford introduced a slightly updated look for the Puma: new headlights, as well as pinches and tucks for the side sills and rear bumper. The 12-inch center touchscreen is huge for such a small car and dwarfs rival displays. There is also a huge 12.8-inch digital instrument display.
Puma's standard options are limited to two 1-liter three-cylinder engines that produce 123 or 153 hp and drive the front wheels. Both versions get a 48-volt mild hybrid. Ford gave it a bigger turbocharger for more power – 155 hp. You can also choose a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission.
Hyundai Kona
The car has a 1-liter turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline engine that is mated to a six-speed manual transmission and a 48-volt mild hybrid system for 118 hp.
If you want a Kona with an automatic transmission, you'll need to upgrade to the Kona Hybrid, which combines a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with a very small battery and an electric motor for 139 hp. In addition, there's a new N Line trim that offers a sportier look and less contrasting trim colors – emulating the 276-horsepower Kona N. Phew.
