On the morning of Friday, December 20, Russia launched a combined attack on Kyiv using "Kinzhal" air defense missiles and Iskander/KN-23 ballistic missiles. Unfortunately, the shelling resulted in casualties, and debris fell in several areas of the city.
This was announced by the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration Serhii Popko, the KRMA press service reports. Residents of the capital were urged not to ignore the warnings.
"Today at about 7:00 am, the Russian armed forces launched a combined missile attack on Kyiv. First, the enemy used "Kinzhal" aeroballistic missiles from MiG-31K and Iskander/KN-23 ballistic missiles. A total of 8 missiles were fired. As a result of this strike, debris fell in 3 districts of the city," said Popko.
According to him, an office building, road surface, and a gas pipe were damaged in Holosiivskyi district, with subsequent depressurization; 5 cars caught fire. At another address, the facade of an office building was damaged, followed by a fire on the roof, and the fifteenth floor was destroyed.
A fire broke out in a non-residential building in Solomianskyi district as a result of falling debris. The fire was extinguished, and no injuries were reported. In Shevchenkivskyi district, a fire broke out in a non-residential building.
Later, the press service of the Armed Forces of Ukraine clarified that at about 7:00 a.m. on December 20, 2024, the enemy struck the capital of Ukraine with 5 "Iskander-M"/KN-23 ballistic missiles. The missiles were launched from Voronezh and Bryansk regions of the Russian Federation.
For his part, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that 630 residential buildings, 16 medical institutions, 17 schools, and 13 kindergartens in Holosiivskyi district are without heat as a result of the enemy attack and damage to the heating main. "Kyivteploenergo" crews have already started working to eliminate the consequences of the large-scale damage.
Later, the police clarified that 11 people were injured, including one dead, as a result of the morning Russian attack on the capital. Among the wounded are men and women aged 19 to 58, most of whom were diagnosed with multiple shrapnel wounds and bruises on their bodies. The deceased man was 53 years old.
Later it became known that a man died as a result of the attack. Under the procedural guidance of the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office, criminal proceedings were initiated over a war crime that led to the death of a person (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
At 4:25 p.m., the KRMA clarified that the number of casualties in Kyiv has already increased as a result of today's missile strike. A man sustained a cut wound and bruises to his limbs and was treated on the spot. In total, 13 people were injured.
