Tenth-century Viking sword with rare animal image found in the Netherlands
A Viking sword has been found in the Netherlands. According to scientists, this is the "first of its kind" sword of the tenth century Scandinavian warriors with a rare image of animals.
The incredible discovery was made by treasure hunter Sander Visser while scanning farmland in the north of the Netherlands. Experts suggest that the tip could be part of a valuable gilded sword, TheSun reports.
Visser started digging after he heard a distinctive beeping sound from his metal detector. The rare tip was buried only a few centimeters below the ground.
The researcher donated the find to the Frieze Museum in the Netherlands, where it will be on public display in 2025.
The unique Viking-era artifact has intricate patterns in the Mammen style, a decorative art tradition that experts say was quite common in Viking culture.
According to the scientists, the found artifact is divided into five separate parts, the outer edges of which show the heads of boars. It is known that in Viking culture, wild boars symbolized strength, courage, and protection, qualities often associated with war.
The central part of the cap has a complex twisted knot, which, according to experts, emphasizes the craftsmanship of the time.
"This extraordinary find shows that there is still much to discover about the Viking Age in Frisia. It enriches our understanding of the interaction between the Vikings and the Frisians," said Nelleke Eissennagger-van der Plume, director of the Frisian Academy.
Experts say that the rare artifact, which had great symbolic value, was often passed down from generation to generation by elite Viking fighters.
